Non-Estrogenic

Jaques perfumes are formulated to be completely non-estrogenic, meaning they do not contain ingredients that mimic or interfere with natural hormone function. Many commercial fragrances use parabens, BHT, phthalates, dyes and other preservatives and enhancers that can act as endocrine disruptors, subtly influencing hormone levels over time. These compounds can bind to estrogen receptors in the body, potentially leading to imbalances.

At Jaques, we take a different approach. Our perfumes are crafted using carefully selected aroma compounds and natural ingredients that do not interact with hormone receptors. We avoid phthalates, parabens, and any unnecessary additives, which are commonly linked to estrogenic activity. Instead, we focus on high-quality raw materials that deliver a pure, long-lasting scent without compromising your body’s natural balance.

By ensuring our formulas remain free from estrogenic compounds, Jaques perfumes offer a safer, cleaner alternative for those who care about both fragrance and well-being.

Why are these additives even there?

Parabens in fragrances act as antimicrobial preservatives, preventing bacteria, mold, and yeast from growing in the formula. The most common parabens used in fragrances are methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. They help maintain the stability and longevity of the scent by preventing spoilage, especially in water-containing formulations like body sprays or scented lotions. Why don’t you need parabens in perfumes? Pure perfume oils, alcohol-based perfumes, and solid perfumes don’t contain water, meaning they don’t provide an environment for bacteria, mold, or yeast to grow. Parabens are mainly used in water-based formulations like body mists or lotions. Same with ethanol (alcohol), which comprises about 85% of the formula. Most perfumes, especially those with high concentrations of alcohol or essential oils, have a naturally long shelf life and do not require added preservatives, often lasting 5 or more years.

Phthalates in fragrances act as fixatives and solvents, helping to slow down the evaporation of scent molecules and ensuring a smooth, consistent blend. The most common phthalate used in fragrances is diethyl phthalate (DEP), which improves fragrance longevity and enhances solubility. It is primarily used in alcohol-based perfumes to help the scent last longer on the skin without altering its character. Why don’t you need phthalates in perfumes? If your fragrance is alcohol-based, ethanol effectively dissolves fragrance compounds and ensures an even distribution, making phthalates unnecessary. The ingredients in the formulas themselves can last a long time and help slow evaporation and enhance longevity without the need for phthalates.

BHT in fragrances acts as an antioxidant, preventing fragrance oils from oxidizing and degrading over time. It helps maintain the stability and longevity of the scent by protecting it from air exposure and light. It is primarily used in oil-based and alcohol-based perfumes to prevent changes in scent profile and discoloration. Why don’t you need BHT in perfumes? Many fragrance compounds, especially those in alcohol-based perfumes, are already resistant to oxidation and degradation, making additional antioxidants unnecessary. Even so, keeping your fragrances in a place that isn’t directly in sunlight, perfumes last a long time.

Colorants and dyes in fragrances are added to give the perfume a specific color, enhancing its visual appeal. The most common colorants used in fragrances are FD&C dyes. These are typically used because when the bottle is a nice clean color, it appeals to the customer and makes them want to buy. However, colorants and dyes do not contribute to the scent itself, or any other necessary uses. Why don’t you need dyes in perfumes? Because I’m assuming you’re a mature adult.

All in all, all this blabber all comes down to one thing. There are tens of unknown chemicals that we don’t know inside modern perfume brands. They are not required to disclose the full ingredient list because it’s a “trade secret”. There are at least a few which, in the long term, can be harmful to wellbeing, hormone function, and overall health. Sure, it’s something small, but every step counts. Start by making different choices, and become the person who cares enough about their health to buy the healthier perfume. That’s real dedication.
